The EU Takes a Bold Step Towards Establishing the World’s First AI Regulations

and a summary from the last few days the
European Union has taken a significant
step towards establishing the world's
first rules and regulations on
artificial intelligence last week the
internal Market Committee and the civil
liberties committee endorse new
transparency and risk management rules
for AI systems with an overwhelming
majority of 84 votes in favor seven
against and 12 abstentions the goal is
to ensure a human-centric and ethical
development of AI the proposed
regulations follow a risk-based approach
with obligations for providers and users
depending on the level of risk involved
the legislation includes bans on
biometric surveillance in motion
recognition and predictive policing AI
systems the regulations also cover
general purpose Ai and Foundation models
like GPT with transparency measures and
requirements to protect fundamental
rights and mitigate risks the move
towards establishing rules on AI in the
EU is a significant step towards
fostering excellence in AI while
strengthening Europe's potential to
compete globally the eu's approach to
artificial intelligence centers on
excellent and Trust aiming to boost
research and Industrial capacity while
ensuring safety and fundamental rights
if approved the eu's rules and
regulations on AI will be the world's
first setting a precedent for other
countries to follow the legislation
promotes Innovation while safeguarding
citizens rights and ensuring that AI
works for people and is a Force for good
in society the draft negotiating mandate
will now go to the entire Parliament for
endorsement before negotiations with the
council can begin the vote is expected
to take place in June and if passed the
eu's AI acts will be a significant
milestone in shaping the responsible
development of AI worldwide
so in the European approach to
Excellence in AI it is understandable
that there are concerns surrounding the
implementation of AI regulations in the
EU and its members however it is
important to consider the potential
benefits and drawbacks of such
regulations before making hasty
decisions
firstly the argument that startups will
be hindered is quite true as there will
be additional costs associated with
getting certified and or re-certified
having regulations in place can provide
Clarity and stability for business
operating in the AI space it can also
help to build trust with consumers who
may be wary of AI Technologies but it
should not be at the detriment of
businesses and especially startups
there will be many challenges in terms
of handling the certification process
and ensuring that all AI models are
thoroughly tested however there should
not be a reason to completely ban AI
Technologies instead efforts should be
made to streamline the certification
process and ensure that it is as
efficient as possible
in terms of the impact of society and
politics it is important to know that AI
Technologies can have far-reaching
consequences therefore it is important
to have regulations in place to ensure
that they are being used ethically and
responsibly Banning AI Technologies
altogether though is not the answer but
rather there should be efforts to
educate and consult with businesses to
ensure that they are using AI in a
responsible Manner and that they have
access to all positive AI developments
overall it is important to strike a
balance between promoting Innovation and
ensuring that AI Technologies are being
used responsibly this can be achieved
through regulation and certification
processes but it is important to ensure
that these processes are efficient and
effective
there are however real concerns from
businesses and entrepreneurs while the
eu's rules and regulations on AI are a
significant step towards responsible AI
development it raises several questions
and concerns for businesses
one of the main concerns is whether the
EU is prepared to immediately certify
all of the AI models that are imperative
to business operations the certification
process can be costly and time consuming
which could affect businesses ability to
innovate and compete globally
another question is whether the EU is
prepared to be so far behind countries
like China in the U.S in the evolution
of AI
these countries have a head start in AI
development and EU businesses May
struggle to keep up with their Global
counterparts
furthermore it's unclear as yet who will
be the body responsible for certifying
AI in the EU the Conformity assessment
body from each country will need to
adapt the AI law and this will require
resources in each country the question
Still Remains how will each country
handle this problem for tech companies
and startups there are concerns about
the impact of the new regulations the
certification process can be expensive
and startups and developers may not have
the resources to invest in certification
additionally natural language processing
NLP models are what's needed as a base
and the lack of access will be a great
challenge for business in conclusion
while the eu's rules and regulations on
AI are a positive step forward to
responsible AI development there are
still questions and concerns that need
to be addressed right now businesses
startups and Tech Ventures will need to
adapt to those new regulations and there
will be challenges in accessing the
resources needed for certification and
of course it remains to be seen how each
country will handle the implementation
of the new AI guideline and laws
